The Bantu Migration
The Bantu Migration is the movement of the Bantu people from the savanna lands of western Sudan to present-day Zimbabwe. The Bantu started moving south and east, gradually reaching present-day Zimbabwe by the eighth century and the southeastern coast by the eleventh century.
The Bantu Migration Why it matters
The Bantu Migration is important because it had an enormous impact on Africa’s economical, cultural, and political practices. It helped spread knowledge about iron working which resulted in the making of iron tools and the Nok sculptures of the Nok people.
The City of Kilwa
The City of Kilwa is a city located on the Swahili Coast. By the late thirteenth century, Kilwa had become the most powerful city on the coast. The city had fields and orchards of rice, millet, oranges, mangoes, and bananas. Kilwa is located on offshore islands.
The City of Kilwa why it matters
The City of Kilwa is important because it had lots of gold, the prosperity of the city depended on it. Kilwa was a good trading center because it has access to the Indian Ocean trade routes. Kilwa had good control over the trade routes in the area.
Great Zimbabwe
The City of Great Zimbabwe is southeast of the modern town of Fort Victoria. The ruins have gold and copper ornaments, stone carvings, and Asian ceramics that once decorated the buildings. The area also had a rich gold-bearing belt.
Great Zimbabwe why it matters
The City of Great Zimbabwe is important because the people there traded with others from China, India, and the Middle East. Archaeologists are sure that this place was a rich trading kingdom. The trading helped the people of Great Zimbabwe become wealthy.
The Gold Trade
The gold trade is the trade of gold across the Sahara to many empires like modern-day Senegal, Nigeria, and Ghana. The gold was transported down the Red Sea, later to India.
The Gold Trade why it matters
The gold trade is important because the gold helped pay for India’s spices and silks in demanded by Mediterranean commerce. The African gold also linked the entire world, exclusive of the Western-Hemisphere.
Iron Working in Africa
Iron working in Africa started around 1500 BC. It began right in the heart of Africa. It started in the area of lake Chad, then spread to Nigeria, then to Mali.
Iron Working in Africa why it matters
Iron working is important because having the knowledge of iron working gave peoples like the Bantu an advantage over hunters and gatherers they encountered.
The Nok people and Art
The Nok people originated in the central plateau of northern Nigeria. The date for most Nok sculptures ranges from about 900 BC to about 200 CE. The Nok culture is famous for their terra-cotta sculptures.
The Nok people and Art why it matters
The Nok people and their art were important because there were ancient iron tools found at the village of Nok on the Jos Plateau. The Nok people spread the knowledge of iron working across West Africa.
