What is data and give an example?
Data is raw facts or figures
e.g. data can be readings from survey facts
What is information and give an example?
Information is data that can be processed to give it meaning.
E.g. e.g students finished the race in 60 seconds, 20 seconds and 30 seconds.
What is knowledge and give an example?
Knowledge is information when rules has been applied to it.
What does GIGO stand for?
Garbage in Garbage out.
If something wrong is input into a computer, then something wrong will output once it has been processed.
What is range check and give an example?
Range check- checks that numbers are between a certain range. e.g a movie site would check that a date of birth is before a certain date before renting 15- rated movies.
What is format check and give an example?
Format check makes sure that the correct mix of letters and numbers is entered.
E.g shopping websites may restrict postcodes to a combination of letters and numbers.
What is presence check and give an example?
Present check, checks that a fields is not empty.
e.g when signing up to a social networking site, the username field has to be filled in.
When entering data, transcription errors could occur.. how would you minimise these errors?
- Double-Keying data by entering its twice and checking both are the same
- Visually check before submitting data by proofreading.
Why is it important to check that the data is of good quality?
if the data isn’t of good quality, then there is a danger of GIGO when it is processed.
Characteristics of good quality data
Accuracy - data must be true or correct.
Fitness for purpose - the data must be suitable for what you want it to do.
Bias - data should not favour a particular result.

Use - in the future it is possible that UK may allow people to vote online.
Adv- More people may vote because they don’t have to find a polling station
- its cheaper because fewer people to count votes would need to be employed
Disv-
- They’re is a danger of fixing votes if technology is used
- It is also unfair for those that don’t have internet connection.
Interactive TV Services- Gaming
- Input - Joysticks, steering wheels or game controllers
- Out put - speakers and television equipment
- some games can be played online or played on consoles e.g PS3/ Xbox or wii
- advs - Some educational titles can be used to make it more enganging for children
- some online gamers may develop team working skills - disvs- it can lead to obesity but PS3 Move are changing this
- Repetive Strain Injury can be caused by repetitive gaming motions
How can computers be connected to the internet? Broadband:
Broadband- connects to the internet using a high speed data link
Adv- Its much faster
- it allows you to use the telephone and connect to the internet at the same time
Disv- High monthly charge
-Is still not available in countryside areas
How can computers be connected to the internet? Mobile:
Mobile- using your mobile phone you can connect to the internet via a mobile company
Adv- Its more convenient, you can connect from anywhere
Disv- network coverage can lead to some areas having poor internet access
How can computers be connected to the internet?
Cable:
cable- cable internet can come with bundle tv and landline packages
Adv- they can provide very fast internet connection
- affordable way to gain high speed connection
Disv- not all areas have cable internet providers
Types of Technology: Wireless
Wireless technology enables you to the internet in public such as - restaurants, airports etc.
Adv- No wires needed
- fewer restrictions on where speed internet connections are avalible
Types of Technology: Bluetooth
Bluetooth- bluetooth can be used to operate a wireless keyboard/ mouse and share files between devices.
Adv- Its wireless so no cables needed.
- quick to set up
Disv- can only be used to connect devices in the same room.
Types of Technology: GIS (graphical information system)
GIS- GIS are systems which manage and display geographical info. e.g tom-tom.
Adv- You can save money by using shorter routes and save time.
Disv- Sometimes mapping isn’t up to date which is inconvenient.
What do MIS (management information systems) do?
they provide managers with the data they need to make decisions and strip away

- teachers are able to focus on planning lessons
- can be used for writing patterns

- MIS software can be expensive
- adequate security is needed because of personal data.
what are VLE
Virtual learning environments emerging which enable pupils to gain access to resources or make test online
weather forecasting systems
they predict what the weather will be like, they do this by using sensor readings

- sensors can take readings accurately and never miss a reading

- There is a worry that we rely on technology too much
Online tutorials
- websites may provide text and image to help you learn about a topic adv- material can be available at any time - be kept more engaged with ict -learn at own pace disv -miss out on social interaction -teacher not available to explain things
