Anti-virus
Anti-virus software scans all forms of storage devices for viruses (programs harmful to computers) and, if found, attempts to remove them.
Backup
A copy of important files that is kept separately in case the original files are lost or damaged.
Computer Misuse Act
Defines and criminalises a number of offences involving the use of a computer, eg unauthorised access to computer systems.
Copyright
A set of rights that prevents people copying and disturbing a piece of work without the copyright holder’s permission
Data
Values, typically letters or numbers
Database
A data store designed in an organised way, making it easier to search for the information you need.
Digital
Information stored as discrete values usually represented as numbers. This contrasts with analogue data which is represented by continuous data, usually in waves.
Encryption
Files that are encrypted have been altered using a secret code and are unreadable to unauthorised parties.
File Sharing
The act of sharing files over the internet.
Hacking
Gaining unauthorised access to a computer.
Identity Theft
When the identity of an individual is assumed by someone else in order to profit, financially or otherwise.
Loyalty card
A card given to customers by large stores often supermarkets. Points are added to the customer’s account with each purchase and can be used as a discount at a later date.
Phishing
An attempt to gain personal information about someone by way of deception, eg sending an email pretending to be from their bank asking them for their bank details.
Software
The programs, applications and data in a computer system. Any parts of a computer system that aren’t physical.
Virus
A small program written to cause harm to a computer.
