ICT applications in PD and manufacture Flashcards
What is CAD and when is it used?
CAD stands for Computer - Aided Design. It is used to speed up the designing process.
What is Rapid Prototyping (RPT)?
The use of CNC machines that creates 3D objects using lasers to solidify liquid polymers, known as stereolithography.
What is Layered object modelling (LOM)?
A type of rapid prototyping machine that cuts layers of self-adhesive card or paper, which are the assembled into a 3D model.
What is Fused deposition modelling (FDM)?
A type of rapid prototyping machine that extrudes layers of liquid polymer to build up a model.
What is Virtual reality (VR)?
The use of 3D simulation software that enables designers to produce photo-realistic images of products in lifelike settings and to interact with them.
How does virtual reality help designers?
It allows designers the opportunity to see and manipulate their designs in a photo-realistic, 3D environment.
Give an example of VR being used in a company?
At Jaguar, designers and production engineers use VR systems to plan how production cells will work.
It makes tremendous cost savings for the company and helps to reduce the lead-time of new models.
What is Computer-Integrated manufacture (CIM)?
The use of computers to link together businesses and manufacturing data and the control of production, in order to make production more efficient.
What is Computer-aided engineering (CAE)?
The use of computers to model engineering problems and simulate working conditions to see how they perform.
What is CAM?
Computer- Aided Manufacture
What are the benefits of CAM?
- Reduces production time.
- High accuracy in large scale production.
- Consistent results.
