ICPP 1 - Flow Within Body Systems Flashcards
What is the clinical measurement of “flow” used to determine within bodily systems such as the GI and renal system?
Determines health and diseases, e.g.: blockage in renal system leads to decreased urinary flow.
What is the difference between potential and kinetic energy?
PE = Energy in "stored" form, which can be released and harnessed to do work. KE = Energy associated with movement.
Body required physiological energy for processes and there is a constant interplay between PE and KE.
Give some examples of potential energy and kinetic energy within physiological systems.
PE:
- Storage in inorganic Pi bond in ATP
- PE in concentration gradients across cell membranes
KE:
- Chemical bond breakage
- Electrochemical gradient energy
NB - the rest of this lecture is basic introductions to the topics covered in the rest of these flashcards. No real need to learn any of this if you have basic understanding of each topic covered.
Okay.
