ICND1 - Chapter 2 Flashcards
10BASE-T
- 10 refers to the speed supported, in this case 10 Mbps.
- BASE means it is baseband Ethernet.
- T means twisted-pair cable, Category 5 or above.
10BASE-T: T/FL and variations
- T: Twisted pair cable
- FL: Fiber Link
- LX: Fiber
- SX: Fiber
- CX: Copper cable

What is a repeater?
A repeater is a physical layer device that takes a signal from a device on the network and acts as an amplifier.
Can we add as many repeaters as we need to extend the LAN?
There are limits on the number of repeaters that can be added to a network.
What is a collision?
When two stations attempt to communicate at the same time.
When a collision occurs in CSMA/CD, how do the rest of the stations know that a frame needs to be discarded?
The transmitting station sends a ‘jam’ signal for a set period of time. Then before transmitting, it waits until a wait timer expires.
Collision domain
The network segments that share the same bandwidth are known as collision domains, because when two or more devices within that segment try to communicate at the same time, collisions can occur.
Network segment
A segment is a connection made by a single unbroken network cable.
Do bridges and switches get a MAC address assigned for every port they have?
No
Startup steps for a Cisco router or switch
- Find and check device hardware
- Find and load Cisco IOS software image
- Find and apply device configuration
Option for connecting to device with purposes of configuring it (3)
CON: direct console connection; AUX: From a remote location by dialing into a modem connected to the Cisco device; after device’s VTY ports have been configured, telnet to those VTY ports over the network
Differences in cable type for CON vs AUX connection
Console: rollover cable; AUX: straight through serial
Separation of EXEC sessions into two modes
User EXEC mode; Privileged EXEC mode
Switch between user EXEC and privileged EXEC mode
‘enable’ / ‘disable’
