icing Flashcards
1
Q
what are all the types of icing
A
- structural
- clear
- rime
- mixed
- instrument
- induction
- intake
- carburetor
- frost
2
Q
structural icing
A
- visible moisture
- aircraft surface temperature below freezing
3 types
clear, rime & mixed
3
Q
clear ice
A
type of structural icing
- MOST DANGEROUS
-heavy, hard & difficult to remove - forms when water drops freeze slowly as a smooth sheet of solid ice
- usually 10°- 0°C by large supercooled drops of water
4
Q
rime ice
A
type of structural icing
- opaque, white, rough
- formed by small supercooled water drops freezing quickly
- occurs at lower temperatures that clear
5
Q
mixed ice
A
type of structural icing
clear & rime form simultaneously
6
Q
instrument ice
A
structural icing forming over aircraft instruments and sensors, such as pitot & static
7
Q
induction ice
A
ice REDUCING the amount of air for the engine intake
8
Q
intake ice
A
BLOCKS engine intake
9
Q
carburetor ice
A
- 5° - 20° c
- high air velocity through the venturi that then absorbs the heat by vaporization of the fuel
- indications: 1. drop in RPM then 2. engine roughness
10
Q
frost
A
ice crystals caused by sublimation when both the temperature and d dew point are below freezing
