Iceland Volcanic Eruption, 2010 Flashcards
When did this volcano erupt?
The first eruption occurred on the 20th March, and the main eruption occurred on the 14th of April.
When was the last time that the Iceland volcano erupted before 2010?
Between 1821, and 1823.
What were the first signs of a possible eruption?
Increased seismic activity in December 2009 heralded an eruption, and then ground deformation in February 2010 confirmed it.
What significantly increased the power of the eruption, and caused a phreatomagmatic eruption?
The thick ice cap over the top of the caldera, which increased the pressure of the lava and gas building up underneath, resulting in a much more powerful, explosive eruption.
What is a phreatomagmatic eruption?
An eruption caused by the explosive interaction of lava and water, rapidly converting water into steam, leading to powerful eruptions.
