Ice Packs, Ice Massage, Cryo Flashcards
Cold Ice bath temperature
55-65F
Ice pack machine temperature
10-15F
Insulation of Ice Packs
wet towels wrapped around ice cool more quickly. dry towels are better tolerated by pts who need to have an area cooled for an extended period of time.
What are Cryokinetics?
Intermittent cold applications and stretching of active exercise
Treatment time for ice packs, ice massage, and cryo
3-60’
3-15’ for ice to numb
limit to 60’ to prevent frostbite
What is cryotherapy?
therapeutic application of any substance to the body which results in withdrawal of heat from the body, thereby lowering tissue temperature
What are the Indications of Cryotherapy?
Decreased Muscle Spasm Decrease pain decrease spasticity Relieve swelling and edema (primary use) prevent excessive damage follow injury
What are the Contraindications of cryotherapy?
Severe coronary artery disease
severe hypertension
some rheumatoid arthritis conditions (scleroderma, systemic lupus, erythamatosa)
patients with cold hypersensitivity (cold uticaria (hives, itching, and sweating with cold)) (cold hemoglobinuria (hemoglobin in the urine))
vasospastic disorders
Cryotherapy Precautions
Paralyzed pts
Coma pts
any cold on skin > 1hr
ice over superficial nerves.
What is Cryostretch?
Intermittent cold applications and stretching of soft tissue
What is the process of cryostretch?
- Ice until numb (15-20min)
- Exercise -
First Stretch bout - 65 sec total
static stretch - 20sec
isometric contraction - 5sec
static stretch - 10sec
isometric contraction - 5sec
Static Stretch - 10sec
isometric contraction - 5sec
static stretch - 10sec - Re-numb with ice application for about 3-5min
- Exercise - two bouts and rest as in example above
- R-numb and repeat again.
