Ice and Rain Protection And Flight Controls Flashcards
For operation in icing conditions, what engine protection must be on?
Engine intake bypass doors open and engine ignition switch at manual.
When do icing conditions exist?
SAT on the ground is 10 or below or in the air is 5 or below and visible moisture in any form is present including fog with vis below 1NM.
Also if on the ground and 10 degrees or below with surface snow, ice, standing water or slush.
What are the ice protection systems on the dash 8?
Stall warning vanes Anti iced Pitot tubes and static vents Anti iced cockpit windows heated prop blades elevator horn heaters
Pneumatic boots
Engine intake heater
When does the DEICE PRESS caution light illuminate?
When the pneumatic pressure within the deice system falls below 5.5PSI.
When do the L or R ELEV HORN HEAT caution light illuminate?
Horn heater element failed, it’s unpowered or the test circuit is activated.
What will happen if one of the pilots or the side window overheats?
A caution light will appear and the affected panel is automatically de-energised.
What does the PITOT HEAT 1 or 2 caution light mean?
The associated Pitot head heater failed or is not selected on.
How many pressure regulators supply bleed air for the pneumatic De-ice system? Were does the regulator tap air from?
2, there is one in each nacelle.
Air is taken from upstream of the nacelle shut off valve. This ensures bleed air is still available for De-ice if the bleed air is switched off.
What is the inflation time for a deice boot?
What is the dwell time on the fast and slow cycles?
6 seconds
Fast dwell is 24 seconds
Slow dwell is 204 seconds
What PSI does the boot need to reach for its indicator to light up?
15PSI
Which icing systems are powered by the 115v variable frequency AC?
Prop De ice Windshield heat Elevator horn heat AoA vane heat Engine intake heater lip
What are the timings for prop heating for the above -10 and below -10 settings?
Above -10 each blade will heat for 10 seconds then switch off for 1 minute
Below -10 each blade will heat for 20 seconds then switch off for 1 minute.
Can the prop heaters and elevator horn heat work on the ground?
No, to prevent from overheating the PSEO senses WOW and prevents the heaters from working. They can be tested as the test switch bypasses the protection, but RPM needs to be min 900 for prop cooling.
Wrap around heaters for water drains, check valves etc operate off which power source and when?
Secondary 28v DC and are activated automatically by thermostats below 10 degrees
How are heaters on the distributor assemblies activated?
Manually using the valve heat switch
How is the stall warning vane heated?
28v DC on the ground and 115v variable frequency AC in the air.
What does the #1 or #2 RUD HYD caution light indicate?
Loss is pressure in the associated rudder hydraulic actuator.
What could the RUD PRESS caution light indicate?
Rudder pressure regulator fails to reduce to 900PSI above 140kts,
Rudder pressure regulator fails to increase to 1500PSI below 140kts,
System pressure is 3000 and airspeed above 140kts.
How many degrees further to the rudder setting can the yaw damper move the rudder? How about the trim?
5 degrees left or right
Trim 10 degrees left or right
What is the maximum rudder deflection when flaps are retracted and extended?
12 degrees L and R when retracted
16L 18R when extended
What is an indication and remedy for a rudder Jam?
The PFCS RUD ‘push off’ will illuminate. Push the button which depressurises the associated rudder actuator.
Which primary controls have a disconnect feature?
Pitch and roll
What would you do if you lose control of the elevator and manual trim control?
Arm the standby elevator trim and trim Nose up or down as required.
Above what speed are the outboard roll spoilers De energised?
140kts
