Icao 5 Flashcards

1
Q

When do pilots need to perform an emergency landing?

A

Pilots need to perform an emergency landing When the aircraft loses both engines, in case of hydraulic loss, total electrical failure or any situation which makes it difficult to keep flying

Q

What will communications between pilots and air traffic controllers be like in ten years?

A

I believe the communications bettween pilots and air traffic controllers will be almost the same, using text messages via Datalink for routine communications and voice for non-routine situations. In countries where they don´t use text messages, it will be adopted to reduce the congestion in the frequencies. This system will take place more and more around the world.

A

Hail Storm and Icing conditions can cause serious problems in flight and there are also some natural phenomena which can cause serious damages to the aircraft, sandstorm and volcanic ash can lead even to a fatal accident.

Q

What needs to be considered by pilots before performing na emergency evacuation?

A

Pilots need to consider mainly the area where they performed an emergency or forced landing. If the emergency landing is performed on the rwy, it´s completely importante to consider the best side to inform the crew and start the evacuation immediately, specially if there´s fire. But if the forced landing is performed on a field out of the airport or even a ditching, pilots must consider not only the best side to start the evacuation, but also the best doors (rear or main doors) and in case of ditching, consider the overwing exit doors and the rafts to accomodate all the passengers.

Q

What has changed in the Brazilian aviation industry in the last 10 years?

A

When we mention about Brazilian Aviation Industry we think about an instable scenario. The one which has been changing constantly positively and negatively.
In the last ten years, brazilian could see many changes like Embraer manufacturer having a joint venture with the Giant Boeing; Some Airlines expanding and Other bankrupting, crew members being hired and some dismissed; the training programs for inicial pilots getting a boom and suddenly collapsing and inumerous airliners getting away from Brazil looking for a chance abroad. It has changed quite a lot in the last ten years.

Q

How can airport authorities make runway safety higher?

A

First of all runway safety is beyond airport authorities. Airlines should also provide safety measures, as much as staff and crew members. Basically airports have to keep any hazards away from the runways, for example checking for debris regulary, providing fences and walls around the airport´s area, taking special care of the runway pavement and supllying the ground staff with necessary training consequently avoiding runway incursions caused by their own negligence.

Q

In your opinion, what can Airlines do to improve the pilot´s working conditions?

A

There are many ways to improve the pilot’s working conditions, such as An important thing is the comfort provided by standard hotels and enought overnight time. Pilots have to sleep some hours in order to get over energy to perform the second leg of long-haul flights. Moreover one of the most important things is the layover time, when pilots have the chance of spending some days with their families. And Finally Their flight schedules should be revised.

Q

In your opinion, what has been the impact of crew resource management on flight safety?

A

As far as I’m concerned CRM has been a positive impact on flight safety. Considering the crew members, along the years working under CRM philosophy, they´ve learned how to work as a team, to share the workload, also contributing for a better interaction on board and finally for the extension of the standard operations

Q

In take off roll, how do pilots know it´s time to lift off?

A

During all the take off roll, pilots must watch all the instruments showing the speed, engine parameters and the necessary information for take off. The lift off moment comes when the ideal pitch is adjusted to the ideal take off roll speed.

Q

How do pilots determine V1, V2 speeds and the rotation moment?

A

Every kind of aircraft has its particular take off weight, the runways have their particular lenght and every day we have some different temperature to be considered. All of these factors calculated together contribute for the adjustment of V1, V2 and the rotation moment.

13
Q

What is the most difficult phase of a flight? Why?

A

The most difficult phase of a flight is the take off because if it happens a problem to the aircraft and it won´t have enough thrust to continue climbing it´s much more likely an accident happens, specially if the pilots are unable to come back to the airport for assistance.

Q

Who was your best flight instructor and why?

A

My best flight instructor was my flight simulator one because he was considerate and could teach everything clearly, making me to understand mostly of all the procedures without difficulties. All the lessons were pleasant and I could enjoy them very well.

Q

What are the pilots responsibilities during cruise flight?

A

Basically the pilots are responsible for monitoring the equipments and keeping alert for any kind of situation which may happen in this phase of flight in order to react immediately avoiding an accident.

Q

What kind of damage can a Bird strike cause to an aircraft?

A

A bird strike can cause insignificant damages to even an accident. It can dent the nose, affecting the weather radar, strike the windshield and as a result cracking or breaking it causing pilot incapacitation; the birds can also be ingested by both engines resulting in engine flame out and leading the pilots to perform an emergency landing. Furthermore it can cause minor damages to the fuselagem, like dents and holes on the leading edges and tail edges as well.

17
Q

What are the pilot´s main responsibilities after landing?

A

The pilots are responsible for taxiing to the gate safely, follwiong the after landing checklist correctly and communicating with the controller clearly until shutting down the engines.

18
Q

What do you think will change in relation to pilot´s training in the next few years?

A

I think there will be some changes in the pilot´s training in the next few years, for example the duration of it. In my opinion it will be quicker, more technological and modern, preparing a higher number of pilots for the big future demand.

19
Q

When do pilots need to perform a missed approach?

A

Missed approaches have to be done when there are factors making the landing difficult or impossible to happen. Furthermore Pilots have to perform a missed approach when the plane is unstabilised for the approach or in case of bad weather conditions like windshear, heavy rain or snowfall and dense fog, or due to runway incursion by another aircraft, airport vehicles and animals crossing an active runway.

20
Q

Let´s talk about takeoff. What is the difference between V1 and V2?

A

V1 is the decision making speed. If the pilots suffer some problems and have to abort the take off, they can do it before reaching V1.
V2 is the safe climbing speed. It happens after lift off 35 feet above the runway threshold.

21
Q

What kind of avionics do you think aircraft will be equipped with in the future?

A

Despite the fact that it´s difficult to predict the future, in my opinion aircraft will be equipped with modern and advanced avionics. Also the aircraft will be faster and more efficient in terms of fuel consumption, I trully believe in technology, so in the future everything will turn around technological gadgets, clear systems and easy controlled aircraft. Furthermore the aircraft Will be Faster and more efficient in terms of fuel consumption.

22
Q

How does a flight simulator help a pilot train for emergencies?

A

A flight simulator helps pilots train for emergencies replicating all the emergencies many times, making the pilots to develop their flight skills if they have to face the situation in the real flights. They have the chance to deal with the same technology which is used on the planes and get ready to face problems in flight successfully.

23
Q

What were the best pieces of advice that your flight instructor gave you?

A

My flight instructor gave me many good advises along the training. One of the best ones was to do my best in everything I was doing therefore the outcomes would be positive and I would reach the success soon.

24
Q

How do you prepare for na Early morning flight?

A

For early morning flights I prefer staying in for packing, arranging my belongings, eating some health food and going to bed early to be ready for the flight, specially if it´s a long-haul one.

25
Q

How do you think Brazilian aviation will change in the future?

A

In my opinion Brazilian aviation will change a lot in the future. There will be more job opportunities with the expansion of comercial aviation and manufacturing. The pilot´s trainning will be quicker, more technological and modern, preparing a higher number of pilots for the big future demand.

26
Q

Are airline pilots trained to use standard phraseology in English?

A

To begin with, standard phraseology reduces the risk that a message Will be misunderstood, but this really happens when they start international flights, They practise as they fly being watched by captains. The company applies some familiarization before it happens. If they climbed operational or advanced Icao Level, it means they are qualified for internacional communications using phraseology.
