IC2 Flashcards
What does blood transport? (4)
- Respiratory gases (O2, CO2)
- Nutrients
- Waste
- Hormones (from glands -> target organs)
What does blood regulate?
- Body temp
- pH of interstitial fluids
- ion composition of interstitial fluids
What is hematocrit?
The relative volume of red blood cells out of the total blood volume
What is the clinical meaning of a low hematocrit?
Anemia
What could you tell from a high leukocyte count?
Infection, inflammation, cancer
Function of RBC (erythrocytes)? (4)
- Respiratory gas transport
- Contains hemoglobin transport O2
- Contains carbonic anhydrase transport CO2
- Buffer pH in blood
Hemoglobin consists of which 2 components? Elaborate
Globin and Heme
Globin: 4 folded polypeptide chains, 2a and 2b chains
Heme: protein, NOT pigment! Heme group contains 1 iron (Fe) which binds to 1 O2 molecule. Binding is WEAK, REVERSIBLE
Each Hb molecule transports how many molecules of O2?
4
Define polycythemia/ erythremia?
Too many RBC and high hematocrit
What is hemostasis?
Processes aimed at closing a leak in the vascular system, to prevent loss of blood
What are the 3 phases in hemostasis?
- Vasoconstriction
- Platelet plug
- Fibrin clot
