ic15 soft tissue injury Flashcards
What is articular?
What is periarticular?
Joints, Cartilage
Ligament, tendon, muscles
What is a sprain?
Usually caused by?
Stretch or rupture of ligament
Cause: inversion of foot
Involving anterior talofibular ligament
How many stages of sprain?
Differences?
1: Mild stretching, microscopic tears
Mild swelling and tenderness
Can bear weight and ambulate
2: Incomplete tear of ligament
Moderate pain, swelling, tenderness, discoloration (ecchymosis)
Painful weight bearing, joint instability, restricted range of motion and function
Treatment: RICE + analgesics
3: Complete tear of ligament
Severe pain, swelling, tenderness, discoloration
Cannot bear weight or walk
Significant instability, loss of motion and function
Refer to emergency
Causes of tendonitis (4 points)
Repeated mechanical loading
Sports injury
Rheumatic disease
Drug induced (Fluoroquinolones, Statins)
When does pain occur in bursitis?
When elbow is fully flexed
3 causes of acute bursitis
Injury
Gout
Infection
2 causes of chronic bursitis
Overuse, prolonged kneeling
Rheumatoid arthritis
Acute, subacute, chronic lower back pain duration
Acute: < 4 weeks
Subacute: 4-12 weeks
Chronic: > 12 weeks
Non pharm treatment for back pain
Heat therapy
Patient counselling for lower back pain (5 points)
Engage in low-impact core strengthening exercises to improve spine stability
Use correct lifting techniques, dont bend
Correct posture when sitting / standing
Quit smoking
Weight loss
Symptoms of statin associated muscle weakness
Proximal, symmetric muscle weakness
Nocturnal cramping, stiffness, tendon pain
Treatment for statin associated muscle symptoms
Change to Rosuvastatin
Discontinue of CK > 10x ULN
Drink alot of water to remove myoglobin, prevent renal failure
