Cause of IBD?

A

idiopathic cause by immune response to intestinal microflora
–> autoimmune
–> strong genetic link

UC description?

A

chronic inflammatroy condition characterized by episodes of inflammation limited to the mucosal layer of the colon
–> Relapse remitting pattern
–> limited to the colon (starts in rectum and spreads proximally)

CD description?

A

chronic transmural inflammation with SKIP LESSIONS, affecting mouth to perianal area
–> can have relapse remission but not as common as UC
–> most common start spot is in illeum or proximal colon

genetic influence
poor diet (high in fat, omega 3 useful in IBD though, to much Omega 6 or 9 may cause flares)
smoking??? (helpful for UC harmful for CD)
obesity
sedentary lifestyle

- Antibiotics
- NSAIDs
