Spreading Proximal meaning?
Spreading upwards towards the centre
Spreading distally meaning?
Moving away towards rectum
Cause of IBD?
idiopathic cause by immune response to intestinal microflora
–> autoimmune
–> strong genetic link
UC description?
chronic inflammatroy condition characterized by episodes of inflammation limited to the mucosal layer of the colon
–> Relapse remitting pattern
–> limited to the colon (starts in rectum and spreads proximally)
CD description?
chronic transmural inflammation with SKIP LESSIONS, affecting mouth to perianal area
–> can have relapse remission but not as common as UC
–> most common start spot is in illeum or proximal colon
Is there perianal involvement in UC or CD?
Never for UC
Rare for CD
Is there rectal sparing in UC or CD?
Never in UC
Common in CD
Complication development more common in UC or CD?
CD
Peak onset of IBD?
15-40 years of age
Risk factors of IBD?
age (15-40)
male = female
genetic influence
poor diet (high in fat, omega 3 useful in IBD though, to much Omega 6 or 9 may cause flares)
smoking??? (helpful for UC harmful for CD)
obesity
sedentary lifestyle
Stress
Med:
- Antibiotics
- NSAIDs
