A

Seigneury is a large mass of land, distributed among seigneurs to fulfill their and habitants and duties.
Both seigneurs and habitants played a crucial role in the colony’s social and economic structure by promoting settlement and agriculture development.

Among the various duties, seigneurs had to build churches, act as a judge among habitant’s disputes… while habitants had to pay taxes, clear the land, build their own houses, farm, pay the seigneurs a share of their crops and use mills to grind wheat into flour.
