I love Pharmacology because it's so wonderful Flashcards
Indications for Lotrimin
Superficial mycoses, such as tinea pedis, tinea curis, and ring worm, as well as yeast vaginitis
MOA of Lotrimin
Binds to ergosterol molecules on fungus cell membrane and causes membrane leakage during cell division
Lotrimin is used..
topically in locations and ointments
Nystatin can be used..
both topically and systemically
Indications for Nystatin
Superficial mycoses such as tinea pedis, curis, ring worm, thrush, oral candidiasis. Esophageal and vaginal Candida Cryptococcus also responsive.
MOA of Nystatin
Binds to egosterol molecules
What makes for diminished side effects of Nystatin?
Negligible oral absorption
Used as prophylaxis in pts. at risk for fungal index. (ex. AIDS pts. and chemo pts.)
Nystatin
Txt. of candidasis of oral cavity
Nystatin
Most effective anti fungal for dermatophytes
Lamisil
Side effects of Lamisil
Abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, headache. Less common: elevated liver enzymes, hepatitis, liver damage, and liver failure.
Onychomoycosis txt.
Lamisil
This fungal txt. inhibits fungal membrane synthesis
Diflucan
Crytpococcus or Histoplasmosis are txt. by
Diflucan
Side effects of Diflucan
N/V
Txt. systemic fungal infections such
as systemic Candidadiasis, Histoplasmosis, Coccidiomycosis, Aspergillus and Blastomyces.
Amphocil
Used for fungal meningitis or fungal brain abscesses
Amphocil
Side effects of Amphocil
Very severe fevers and shaking chills “ampho-terrible”, hypotension, renal impairment, and severe anemia
After two weeks of treatment, people with non-resistant active TB generally have markedly reduced infectivity or cease to be contagious. T/F?
T!
Current txt of active TB:
Rifampin/ Rifadin
Isoniazid (INH) / Nitrazid
Pyrazinamide/ Pyrazinamide
Ethambutol/ Myambutol
Rifampin is an…
antibiotic
Indications for Rifampin
TB, MRSA, prophylactic txt. of N. meningitidis
MOA of Rifampin
Inhibits DNA-dependent RNA polymerase
Side effects of Rifampin
orange colored bodily fluids; fever, upset stomach, rash, nausea, hepatoxicity
MOA of Isoniazid
Isoniazid is a pro-drug and must be activated by bacterial catalase. The activated form of INH inhibits the synthesis of mycolic acid in the mycobacterial cell wall.
Lower doses of this drug should be given to people with liver disease
Isoniazid
Side effects of Isoniazid
Rash, abnormal liver function tests, hepatitis, sideroblastic anemia, peripheral neuropathy and CNS effects. INH induced pyridoxine deficiency.
Isoniazid
INH induced pyridoxine deficiency
Avoid peripheral neuropathy with isoniazid by
Concurrent supplementation with pyridoxine
