I&D Universality and bias (Gender and cultral) Flashcards
What is universality ?
A universal theory is one that can be applied to all people, regardless of gender or culture
What is gender bias ?
Results when one gender is treated less fairly than the other, leading to conclusions that don’t represent the psychology of men or women
What are the 2 types of gender bias ?
- Alpha
- Beta
What is alpha bias ?
When the differences between men and women are exaggerated. This often leads to stereotyped male and female characteristics being over emphasised
What is beta bias ?
When the differences between men and women are minimised or ignored. This often happens when findings obtained from samples of only men are applied to women
What can gender bias lead to ?
Androcentrism
What is androcentrism ?
A male centred view of the world. Treating male thinking/behaviour as normal and/or more desirable and regarding female thinking as inferior/abnormal
Give 2 examples of beta bias
- Trivers parental investment theory
- Freud’s Oedipus complex
Give an example of androcentrism
Kohlbergs theory of moral development
Give 4 ways to address gender bias in research
- Sample must contain a balanced sample of both men and women
- Involve both male and female researchers
- Use a standardised script
- Attempt to study the difference within genders not just between
What is imposed etic ?
When you develop a method/theory that suits your culture and use it in a different culture where it may not be appropriate
What is cultural bias ?
The tendency to ignore cultural differences and interpret information about another culture in light of ones own cultural norms and values.
What is cultural relativism ?
The idea that norms and values can only be meaningful and understood within specific social contexts
What is ethnocentrism ?
Judging other cultures based on the standards of your own culture
Give an example of cultural bias
Diagnosing mental disorders, ICD and DSM were both developed in western cultures so may be an example of imposed etic
