I Flashcards
Air Pressure
It is the force exerted on a surface by the air above it as gravity pulls it to Earth.
Tropical
characteristic of a region or climate that is frost-free with temperatures high enough to support year-round plant growth given sufficient moisture.
Celsius
scale based on 0° for the freezing point of water and 100° for the boiling point of water.
Cumulus Cloud
detached, individual, cauliflower-shaped clouds usually spotted in fair weather conditions.
Cirrus Cloud
wispy, feathery, and composed entirely of ice crystals.
Thermometer
an instrument that measures temperature.
Tropical Depression
forms when a low pressure area is accompanied by thunderstorms that produce a circular wind flow with maximum sustained winds below 39 mph.
Ocean Current
the continuous, predictable, directional movement of seawater driven by gravity, wind and water density.
Dew Point
the temperature the air needs to be cooled to (at constant pressure) in order to achieve a relative humidity (RH) of 100%
Hurricane
a storm with a violent wind, in particular a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean.
Desert
an area of land that receives no more than 25 centimeters (10 inches) of precipitation a year.
Typhoon
a tropical cyclone with the maximum wind of 34 knots or higher.
Humidity
the amount of water vapor in the air
Forecast
predict or estimate
Atmosphere
made of the layers of gases surrounding a planet or other celestial body.
Hail
in the form of small balls or lumps
Thunderstorm
A rain-bearing cloud that also produces lightning
Cloud
a mass of water drops or ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere.
Precipitation
any liquid or frozen water that forms in the atmosphere and falls back to the earth.
Drought
a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall, leading to a shortage of water.
Front
to have the front or principal side adjacent to something. also : to have frontage on something.
Meteorology
the science dealing with the atmosphere and its phenomena, including both weather and climate
Freezing Point
the temperature at which a liquid becomes a solid at normal atmospheric pressure
Tornado
A violently rotating column of air touching the ground, usually attached to the base of a thunderstorm.
Cumulonimbus Cloud
menacing looking multi-level clouds, extending high into the sky in towers or plumes.
Thunder
the sound that follows a flash of lightning and is caused by sudden expansion of the air in the path of the electrical discharge
Weather
Thermometer
Waterspout
a pipe, duct, or orifice from which water is spouted or through which it is carried.
Barometer
an instrument for determining the pressure of the atmosphere and hence for assisting in forecasting weather and for determining altitude
Global Warming
Global warming occurs when carbon dioxide (CO2) and other air pollutants collect in the atmosphere and absorb sunlight and solar radiation
Temperature
the degree or intensity of heat present in a substance or object, especially as expressed according to a comparative scale
Barometric Pressure
another term for atmospheric pressure
Funnel Cloud
a funnel-shaped cloud that projects from the base of a thundercloud and that often precedes the formation of a tornado.
Climate
the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period.
