Idiom
An expression with a meaning that is only known through common use eg “it’s raining cats and dogs”
Imagery
Pictures created with words eg “the clouds were edged with shades of pink and gold”
Imperative language
Requests, suggestions, advice or commands. Usually start with a verb. eg “pass the salt?”, “get out of my way!” or “consider the red dress.”
Inclusive language
Words like “we”, “us”. Makes the reader feel like they are part of what is happening. eg “we might not like it, but our children’s right to confidential medical advice should take precedence over our right to know about it”
Inference
To draw a conclusion based on logical deductions and facts. eg if your friend walked out of an exam looking dejected, you would assume they did not think they did well.
