hypothyroidism Flashcards
RDA for iodine
150 mcg/day adults
220 if pregnant
food sources of iodine
seafood/ seaweed
iodized salt
what is zinc involved in?
several body enzymes involved in protein, DNA and RNA metabolism
zinc absorption?
small intestine
rates are dependent on body status
inhibited by alcohol
stored in muscle and bone
RDA for zinc
11 mg for men
8mg for women
dependant on body size
what can zinc supplementation interfere with?

legumes and whole grains
animal sources have higher bioavailabiltiy
what does Mangaese play a role in?

Manganese deficiency vs excess?
deficiency is uncommon can happen in pancreatic insufficiency.
excess accumulates in liver and CNS so neuro
usually caused by environment
what does chromium do? sources?

highest in heart, kidney, spleen, liver
what does selenium do?
integral to selenoproteins liek glutathione peroxidase (in conjunction with vitamin E) and deiodinase
RDA for selenium and supplementation for hypothyroidism?
55 mcg/day all adults
supplementation is usually around 200mcg/day
food sources of selenium?
brazil nuts (68 -91 mcg per nut)
seafood, legumes, whole grains, lean meats, dairy.
therapeutic considerations for hypothyroidism
metabolic rates are slower, energy needs can be 15-40% lower
