Hypothesis Testing for the Mean Flashcards
What is a hypothesis
A hypothesis is a claim about a population parameter
Null Hypothesis
The Status Quo. Always = sign
What do you start with
Assume the Null Hypothesis is TRUE and try to disprove it.
When do you reject the Null Hypothesis
If P-value is low reject Ho
If P-value is less than 0.05
Reject Ho
Alternative Hypothesis
The opposite of the Null Hypothesis
What signs does the Alternative Hypothesis have in it
Never contains the “=” sign. It contains ≠ or > or <
Central Limit Theorem
If the sample size is greater than 30, the sample is approximately normally distributed.
Level of Significance
0.05 - Alpha is 5%
One-Tailed
Divide p-value (sig) by 2
If P-value is > 0.05
Fail to reject Ho
Type 1 Error
We may have rejected the null hypothesis, when the null hypothesis could have been true
Type 2 Error
We may have not rejected the null hypothesis, when the null hypothesis may have been false
