Hypothesis & Sampling Flashcards
Define a directional hypothesis
Indicates a direction in the prediction, e.g. ‘ students with pets perform better than students without pets’
Define a non-directional hypothesis
Doesn’t indicate a direction, e.g. ‘owning pets will affect students’ exam results
Describe the Null Hypothesis
States that there is no relationship between the two variables being studied. There will be no changes in the DV due to change in the IV.
Results are due to chance
Describe Opportunity sampling:
uses people who are available at the time the study is carried out
Describe random sampling:
When every person in the target population has an equal chance of being selected
Describe systematic sampling
when a system is used to select participants
Describe stratified sampling:
when you identify the subgroups and select participants in proportion with their occurrences
