A hypothesis
A clear precise testable statement that states the relationship between the variables to be investigated. Stated at the outset of the study.
null hypothesis
States that the independent variable will not affect the dependent variable. There will be no effect
Directional hypothesis
A one tailed hypotheses
States the direction of the difference or relationship. How the independent variable will affect the dependent variable
Non-directional hypothesis
Two-tailed hypothesis
States that the independent variable will affect the dependent variable, but not the direction of that difference or relationship
When would you choose a null hypotheses?
If you were trying to disprove a theory or another persons research
