HYPOTHESES Flashcards
Aim
A general expression of what the researcher intends to investigate
Hypothesis
a precise, testable statement of what the researcher(s) predict will be the outcome of the study
It should be OPERATIONALISED i.e. clearly defined and measured
Directional Hypothesis
States strength / direction of a significant change / difference / relationship between variables - e.g. changes are greater or lesser, positive or negative
A non-directional Hypothesis
Doesn’t state the direction - just that there is a significant difference / association / correlation between variables
Experimental Method
Involves a researcher manipulating the IV, causing it to vary and recording the effect of the IV on the DV.
There are different levels of the IV
IV = what is manipulated DV = what is measured
Null Hypothesis
There is not a significant relationship!
There is not a significant relationship between the two variables being studied (one variable does not affect the other)
If there is a change it will be due to chance.
Alternative Hypothesis
There will be a significant relationship between the two variables being studied (i.e. one variable effects the other). Results not due to chance / are significant in terms of supporting the theory being investigated
