hypothalamus Flashcards
where is the hypothalamus situated ?
( a part of the brain )
above the pituitary gland
what does the hypothalamus do?
controls functioning of the autonomic nervous system
the release of hormones from the pituitary gland
why is it considered a gland?
some of its neurons secrete the hormone ADH
what is ADH ?
anti-diretic hormone
where is ADH stored ?
after passing down nerve fibers
stored in the posterior lobe of the pituitary
where are the hormones that the hypothalamus needs to control the release of hormones ?
hormones from the anterior lobe of the pituitary are needed
how does the hypothalamus control the release of hormones?
hypothalamus secretes releasing factors that travel in the blood to the anterior lobe
stimulating the production/ release of required hormones
what happens when ADH/ other hormones are needed ?
nerve impulses from hypothalamus stimulate posterior lobe of pituitary
to release the stored ADH into the blood stream
