Hypoglycaemia is the limiting factor to what?
Good glycaemic control
What are the symptoms of hypoglycaemia?
Hunger weakness shaking dizzy fatigue anxiety nervousness tremulousness profuse sweat fast heartbeat impaired vision headache irritability
Define severe hypoglycaemia?
Hypoglycaemia that leads to seizures, unconsciousness or the need for external assistance
What is the immediate treatemnt for hypoglycaemia?
Consume 15-20g glucose or simple carbohydrates
recheck BG at 15 mins - if hypo repeat
Once returned to nromal, eat a small snack if next planned meal/snack is >1 hour away
Give examples of 15-20g of carbohygrate that could be used?
Glucose tablets
Gel tube (Glucogel)
1/2 cup regular coca-cola
How is severe hypoglycaemia treated?
Glucagon 1mg injection into buttock/ arm or thigh
What is impaired hypoglycaemia awareness?
When hypoglycaemia occurs (4.0-3.5mmol/l) and individual feels no change in symptoms
How can hypoglycaemia be avoided?
Exclude contributing conditions
Educaional review
Insulin management
Frequent lgucose monitoring
Structured education programme (TIM/ DAFNE)
Continous glucose monitoring if available
