Hypnosis (Abbe Faria) Flashcards
What is a lucid sleep?
A trance
How did the German doctor, Franz Mesmer, use hypnosis to cure patients?
He manipulated the body’s natural magnetism through the use of magnets and suggestion. After being “magnetized”, the patients suffered a convulsion and then claimed to feel better.
What did Abbé Faria think of Franz Mesmer’s hypnotism method?
He believed it was absurd and that the magnets were not even a vital part of the process. He did my believe any special forces were necessary. For the patient to fall into a lucid sleep, they only had to rely on the power of suggestion
How did Scottish surgeon, James Braid, define hypnosis?
“Hypnosis is not a type of sleep but a concentration on a single idea, resulting in heightened suggestibility.”
Faria once said, “everything comes from the subject and takes place in his _____.”
