Hypervigilance Flashcards
What is officer safety?
When officers reduce lethal threat
Another word for “officer safety” is Hypervigilance, how is it defined?
Hypervigilance is the necessary manner of viewing the world from a threat-based perspective, having the mindset to see the events unfolding as potentially hazardous
What are the hyper vigilant questions an officer must ask him/herself on a car stop
who is in the backseat?
Where are everyone’s hands?
Where do I stand?
Where do I move if this traffic stop goes bad and I have to defend myself?
Hypervigilance is a biological state. where in the brain is it found?
Its foundation is in the neurological functioning of the brain. The brain has a set of structures known as the reticular activating system (ras), that determine the level of alertness that is necessary at any given time.
What does the autonomic nervous system control?
It controls the body's internal organs and automatic functions: pulse respiration body temperature blood pressure and other functions
What 2 separate and opposite branches is the autonomic nervous system divided?
the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches
What branch of the autonomic nervous system is considered the “on-duty” branch
The SYMPATHETIC branch turns on those bodily functions that are required for physical survival:
- increased peripheral vision
- improved hearing
- faster reaction times
- increased blood sugar
- elevated heart rate
- increased blood pressure
- a general sense of energy to meet and overcome any threats that are challenging the body’s capacity to survive
