Hypertrophy Flashcards
1
Q
Concentric Hypertrophy
A
- Concentric thickening of the ventricular wall
2
Q
Cause for concentric hypertrophy
A
- Increased mechanical load
- May be in surviving CMs after MI
3
Q
Wall-thinning and dilatation
A
- Adverse remodelling
- Can result from concentric hypertrophy
- May be direct, due to valve disease and volume overload etc.
4
Q
Concentric HT and dilatation both show
A
- Myocyte enlargement
- Reprogrammed gene expression
- Fibrosis
- Contractile dysfunction
5
Q
Athletics and HT, difference with HF
A
- Pressure loading (weight-lifter)
- Volume loading (cyclist)
- Hearts may look similar but function will be different
- Adverse Ca handling (from reprogrammed gene expression) is unique to HF
