Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy Flashcards
What is hypertrophic osteodystrophy?
Supperative osteomyelitis of the metaphysis of long bone just below the growth plate?
What are the risk factors of hypertrophic osteodystrophy?
Young about 3-5 months
Large breeds
Males > females
What are the clinical signs/presentation of hypertrophic osteodystrophy?
Swelling of the metaphyseal region of long bones
Variable degrees of pain, inflammation & lameness
Systemic illness (Hyperthermia, anorexia, depression, diarrhea)
What are the common locations for hypertrophic osteodystrophy?
Radius
Ulna
Tibia
Any long bone
What diagnostics would you want to perform if hypertrophic osteodystrophy is suspected?
Radiographs
Blood culture
What would you see on radiographs of early stages of hypertrophic osteodystrophy?
Soft tissue swelling adjacent to physis
Linear irregular lysis adjacent & parallel to physis
Physis preserved
What would you see on radiographs of late stages of hypertrophic osteodystrophy?
Periosteal reaction become confluent with the cortex resulting in marked boney enlargement of the metaphysis
What are the treatment options for hypertrophic osteodystrophy?
Analgesics
Balanced diet
Systemic support if systemically ill
What is the prognosis of hypertrophic osteodystrophy?
Usually self limiting 7-10 days
Mild cases= good prognosis
Sever cases with systemic illness more guarded
may have recurrence
angular limb deformity- bridging of the physis
