Hyperthermia Flashcards
Hyperpyrexia
41 degrees Celsius (105.8 degrees Farenheit)
Intermittent fever
Body temp alternates at regular intervals between periods of fever and periods of normal or subnormal temps
Remittent fever
a wide range of temp fluctuations occurs over a 24-hr period, all above normal (eg cold or flu)
Relapsing fever
Short febrile periods of a few days are interspersed with periods of 1 or 2 days of normal temp.
Constant fever
Body temp fluctuates minimally but always remains above normal (eg typhoid fever)
Fever spike
A tempt that rises to fever level rapidly following a normal temp and then returns to normal within a few hours (eg bacterial blood infections)
Patho
Set-point of the hypothalamic thermostat changes suddenly from normal to a higher level > the core body temp reaches this new set-point after several hrs, while the pt experiences chills and shivering (chill phase)
