Hypertensive Drugs Flashcards
Atenolo
Beta 1 blocker. Reduces heart rate and heart contractility, decreasing BP.
Bendroflumethiazide
It’s a diuretic. Causes excess urination, leading to a decrease in blood volume; hence, it reduces blood pressure.
Ramipril
This is an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor. It prevents the production of angiotensin 2 and consequently aldosterone, which reduces BP.
Angiotension 2
It increases BP, by binding to 1 or 2 of G coupled protein receptors ( AT1 and AT2( but more in the AT1).
Increases BP by;
- Causing vasoconstriction in the arterioles
- Increasing the reabsorption of sodium
- Increasing the release of noradrenaline through the sympathetic nervous system pathway.
- Stimulating the release of aldosterone through the kidneys
- Stimulates thirst sensation and increases the release of anti-diuretic hormone.
Other drugs like Rmipril are
- Isinopril
- Enalapril
Verapamil
It’s a calcium channel blocker. Used to treat blood pressure, angina, and superventricular tachycardia
Amlodipine
Calcium channel blocker
Propranolol, carvedilol
Nifecard
Contains nefedipine, which is a calcium channel blocker
