Increase in BP after 20 weeks gestation or onset in the postpartum period with:

Proteinuria OR

Any symptoms of severe preeclampsia
Thrombocytopenia
Renal insufficiency
Impaired liver function
Pulmonary edema
Cerebral or visual symptoms

Pathophysiology
Associated with abnormalplacentation

Placenta is not as well perfused by maternal blood

Underperfusion → epithelial cells constrict → increased peripheral resistance and permeability of the blood vessels which are now leaky
