consider secondary hypertension bc another condition eg tumour secreting hormones (phaeochromocytoma, cushing’s, conns’) underlying kidney disease (renal artery stenosis, chronic pyelonephritis, glomerulonephritis), collagen vascular disorders (diabetes, SLE etc)

careful history and physical exam
serum creatinine, urea and electrolytes
urine microscopy
