What is the British National Formulary?
A
- The BNF originated in 1939 with the national war formulary: a list of medications thought necessary to maintain a decent standard of healthcare
- To begin with the BNF was published every 3 years
- Now the BNF is updated every 6 months, the first online version was published in 2005
- The BNF contains information on the mechanism, safety, recommended dosage and cost of most licensed medicine

What is Nadolol
A
a beta-blocker that has anti-anxiety properties

Why should Nadolol not be given to people with asthma?
A
- because bronchospasms can be reversed using beta-2 adrenoceptor agonists like salbutamol
- salbutamol will stimulate the sympathetic system cause bronchodilation
- however Nadolol will do the opposite and induce parasympathetic activity which will constrict the bronchioles
