What are the etiological factors associated with hypertension ?
Genetic failure of auto regulation of blood vessel wall constriction.
Age.
Contraceptive pill.
Menopause.
HF.
Diabetes.
Pregnancy.
Excessive alcohol consumption.
Smoking.
Stress.
Define stage 1 hypertension.
140/90mmHg
Define stage 2 hypertension.
160/100mmHg
Define stage 3 hypertension.
> 180/>120mmHg
What are symptoms of hypertension ?
Headache.
TIAs.
What drugs can be used to treat hypertension ?
Beta blockers.
ACE inhibitors.
Angiotensin II blockers.
Calcium channel blockers.
Diuretics.
A patient has unstable hypertension, how often will they be reviewed by their GP ?
Every 2-3 months.
A patient has stable hypertension, how often will they be reviewed by their GP ?
Annually.
What blood pressure values would you be willing to treat in general practice ?
ASA I and ASA II.

Define ASA I hypertension.
<140/<90
Define ASA II hypertension.
140-159/90-94
Your patient has a BP reading of over 160/95, would you be willing to treat them ?
No.
Should be treated in secondary care if emergency treatment is required.
ASA III and ASA IV.
