Hypersensitivity and Autoimmunity Flashcards
What are the two types of immunity
Innate and Adaptive
Define hypersensitivity
When the normally beneficial components of the immune response act in an exaggerated or inappropriate way to environmental antigens which do not normally cause tissue damage
What is the main way type 1 hypersensitivity arises
Inappropriate synthesis of IgE, presence of IgE is associated with allergy
Describe type II hypersensitivity
Can be autoimmune
IgE or IgM
Describe type III hypersensitivity
Conditions arise as a result of abnormal deposition of formed antigen
Describe type IV hypersensitivity
No detectible antibody component
Mediated by Th1 cells and cytokine products
Define autoimmune disease
A clinical disorder characterised by tissue or organ damage mediated through immunological mechanisms which are directed against self antigens
