Hyperaldosetonism Flashcards
What is the human name of hyperaldosteronism
Conn’s syndrome
What is hyperaldosteronism
Hyperplasia or neoplasia of the adrenal glands that will cause the overproduction of Aldoseterone
What is aldosterone production stimulated by
Angiotensin 2 and increased potassium
Where is aldosterone released from and what does it effect
Released by Zona Glomerulosa
Effects mineralocorticoid receptors in the distal renal tubules stimulating sodium reabsorption and potassium and hydrogen excretion
It mediates Vasoconstriction (increase production of prostacyclin, up-regulates ET production, ACE, Ang II, and AT1 receptors) which will cause hypertension
What are some clinical signs of hyperaldosteronism
Hypokalemic - inappetence, weakness, head down
Hypertension - retinal detachment, ocular haemoohage, kidney damage, cardiac hypertrophy
How do you diagnose hyperaldosteronism
Will see high ALDO and low plasma renin activity
U/S or CT to identify tumors
How do you treat hyperaldosteronism
MEDICAL MANAGEMENT FISRT then six
Stabilize hypertension and potassium loss with spirolactone, potassium supplementation, and amlodipine
Can do unilateral adrenalectomy or continue with medical management
Which is better for prognosis in hyperaldosteronism cases, medical management or surgery
Either, both have same prognosis regardless if the neoplasia is a carcinoma or adenoma
