Hyper-reality Flashcards
What is hyper-reality?
A condition in which “reality” has been replaced by simulacra - Baudrillard argues that today we only see prepared realities (e.g. edited footage)
What does hyper-reality do?
Blurs real + simulated media products
Often with use of photoshop, AI, and filters
Where does hyper-reality take place?
In everything, even documentaries + crime thrillers to create idea that everything is real
What are the techniques used to create hyper-reality?
Pastiche + parody, bricolage, intertextuality
What is pastiche?
Involves making new media text from components of another
Using conventions of specific genre in a text
What is a parody?
A parody imitates + mocks a specific, recognisable text
Is a type of pastiche
What is bricolage?
Used to refer to process of adaptation/improvisation where aspects of 1 style are given diff meanings when compared with stylistic features from another
What is intertextuality?
Refers to process of making references to any media text via another media text
How do producers create intertextuality?
They use hybridity, bricolage, + pastiche
What is the purpose of intertextuality?
So a media type can pay homage to another media type, + to create hybrid/new genre
What is merging of styles/genres?
Where 1 text uses typical conventions of multiple genres
Why is merging hard for audiences?
Can make it hard for audiences to pin down which genre the text is - makes it postmodern
What is style over substance?
Big belief of postmodernism is that media texts dont need to have deep hidden meanings
Media texts can be what they are - fun + entertaining
What are the effects of intertextuality on the audience?
- Allows genres to develop + create new sub genres/hybrids, will engage audience
- Establishes genre by enabling established relationship between audience + text
