What questions should you ask yourself to determine type of bath?
-personal preferences
-overall health
-limitations (physical or developmental)

What are the important things to remember for a bed bath?
-provide privacy
-safety
-cleanest to dirtiest
-begin at the top
-distal to proximal
When would soaking and trimming the toenails be contraindicated?
when the client has diabetes or peripheral vascular disease
Why do we do hair care?
-prevents irritation to the scalp
-promotes circulation
-brushing the hair distributes oils along hair shaft
-maintain/improve condition of hair and scalp
-promote self-esteem/sense of well-being
-shampooing can be performed in bed
Define xerostomia
excessive dry mouth– causes are medications, health conditions, smoking, alcohol use, and dehydration
Interventions for xerostomia
-sips of water
-moisture spray
-moisturize lips
-sugar free gum/candy
AVOID: alcohol, coffee, tobacco
What are the 3 basic strokes of a back massage?
effleurage– sliding or gliding, good for beginning or ending, gentle touch to warm up muscles
petrissage– kneading, skin rolling, slowly picking up and squeezing an area
tapotement– tapping or drumming, used to wake up the system
When is a massage contraindicated?
-skin breakdown
-suspected clots
-infection
-risk of fracture
-vertebral or coagulation issues (bleeding disorders)
