Hydrostatics Flashcards
What are the Fluid statistics at rest?
-no viscous forces
-The only forces acting are weight (body force) & forces due to pressure (surface forces)
-Weight acts only on the z-direction
-Force due to pressure acts normal to the surface
-Forces have to balance
What is the body force equal to?
equal to the weight of the element
What are the surface forces due to?
Surface forces due to pressure
What does the pressure in a homogeneous, incompressible fluid at rest depend on?
the depth of the fluid, and it is not influenced by the size or shape of the container
What does the hydrostatic paradox state?
The hydrostatic paradox states the fact that in different shaped containers, with the same base area, which are filled with a liquid of the same height, the applied force by the liquid on the base of each container is exactly the same.
What do manometers use to measure pressure?
Manometers use vertical or inclined liquid columns to measure pressure
Examples of manometers
Barometer, piezometer tube, U-tube manometer, Differential U-tube manometer
What is a barometer
A barometer is a device which is used to measure atmospheric pressure. It is commonly filled with liquid mercury
What is a piezometer?
A simple tube open at the top, measures the pressure inside the tank.
What is a piezometer used to measure?
Pressure which are slightly higher than atmospheric pressure
Pressure in tanks containing liquids
What is a U-tube Manometer?
A U-tube that uses more than one fluid, useful when the liquid in the tank is gas.
A different U-tube manometer may use…
three different fluids.
A different u-tube manometer can be used to measure?
Can be used to measure the pressure difference between two tanks
