Hydrophytes and Xerophytes Flashcards
What are Hydrophytes?
Plants adapted especially to living in water
What are Xerophytes?
Plants adapted especially to living in extreme dry conditions
Adaptations of Hydrophytes (Surface) (2)
Thin or non-existent waxy cuticle, many stomata on upper-side of the leaf, almost always open
Adaptations of Hydrophytes (Inside) (2)
Large air spaces for buoyancy and gas exchange, fewer xylem (less need for water transport)
Adaptations of Hydrophytes (Outside) (1)
Reduced root and stem structure (no need for it)
Adaptations of Xerophytes (Surface) (4)
Thick, fleshy surface for defence (multiple layers of epidermi), spikes instead of leaves (so no transpiration), few and sunken stomata
Adaptations of Xerophytes (Inside) (2)
Regular sized air spaces, small surface area
Adaptations of Xerophytes (Outside) (3)
Trichomes to hold water in sunken stomata, rolled leaves, lateral and beneficial roots
