Hydronic Heating Systems Flashcards
A Hydronic heating system is operated by heating water to ________ at boiler
Preset temperature
A Hydronic heating system works by passing water through terminal devices/_______ which transfer heat to the air
Convectors
System Components
1. _______ May simply be a hot water tank in some applications
- ______ To operate boiler and control water flow
- ______ To allow for expansion that takes place when water is heated
- ______ Copper, Steel, Cast iron, plastic (PEX)
- ______ To circulate the water
- ______ Variety of types
- Boiler
- Controls and valves
- Expansion Tank
- Piping
- Pump
- Terminal devices
Series loops
Common in smaller buildings and residential
And simple and inexpensive to install
No individual terminal control
One pipe
Used for supply and return
Individual convectors controlled using T valves
Can be zoned and upped or downfed
Two pipe direct return
One pipe for supply and another for return
Return water flows opposite direction to the supply
Requires less piping than reverse return but difficult to balance
Two pipe reverse return
One pipe for supply and another for return
Return water flows the same direction as the supply
Requires more piping than direct return but easier to balance
Three and four pipe systems
Used in large buildings where both heating and cooling use hydronics
Radiant in-floor hydronic systems
Pipes laid out in a coil or grid pattern
Water circulated there pipes and warms the surface in contact
Surfaces then warms space by radiation
