1
Q

Where is the most freshwater stored?

A

In glaciers

2
Q

Rain shadow effect

A

Mountains force clouds to rise into colder atmosphere, which cools/condenses them and makes them expend precipitation on the windward side. Leeward side gets all dry and sad as a result.

3
Q

Unsaturated zone

A

Shallowest level, pores contain air as well as water. Aka vadose zone.

4
Q

Saturated zone

A

Underneath unsaturated zone. Pores completely full of water. Aka phreatic zone.

Groundwater table

A

Boundary between unsaturated and saturated zones. Aka water table.

6
Q

Water table topography

A

Water table follows general surface topography, but with less steep slopes. We can map it by digging wells in several places. (If you dig below the water table, water will rush in and fill the hole!)

7
Q

Recharge

A

Infiltration of water into subsurface formation, “recharges” the water table/raises it.

8
Q

Discharge

A

Movement of groundwater to the surface, “discharges” water into other areas, water table lowers.

9
Q

Influent stream

A

Runs above the water table, so water permeates/goes down to the water table, recharging it.

10
Q

Effluent stream

A

Runs below the water table, so water is taken from the water table to fill it, discharging it.

Aquifers

A

Rock formations through which enough groundwater flows to supply wells.

12
Q

Recharge area

A

Region that specifically recharges a confined aquifer–special because rainfall directly above a confined aquifer doesn’t actually recharge it due to aquiclude

12
Q

Unconfined Aquifer

A

Water travels through regions of relatively uniform permeability. At the height of the water table.

Confined aquifer

A

Aquifer bounded by aquicludes both above and below.

13
Q

Artesian flow

A

Water moving through a confined aquifer. Water is under pressure because of the weight of water from higher parts of the aquifer–as such, no energy is needed to pump it to the surface.

13
Q

Aquiclude

A

An impermeable or almost impermeable rock formation–ex. unfractured shale.

14
Q

Perched water table

A

An area with an aquiclude below but not above. Recharges like a normal water table, but is above the main water table.

15
Q

Cone of depression (lol)

A

Cone-shaped area of the water table where a well has lowered the water level.

16
Q

Saltwater margin

A

Separation between fresh groundwater and salty groundwater, near the ocean. Slopes downward as it moves inland.

17
Q

Saltwater intrusion

A

When too much freshwater is discharged from wells near the ocean, saltwater can be sucked into the well instead.

18
Q

Sinkhole

A

Result of a limestone cave collapsing: a steep depression in the land above that can form suddenly.

19
Q

Karst topography

A

Irregular, hilly terrain–lots of sinkholes and caves, very few surface streams.

20
Q

Potable water

A

Water that can be safely drunk by humans.

21
Q

Hard water

A

Groundwater that passes through limestone. Full of calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate ions.
