Hydrology and fluvial geomorphology Flashcards
What are outputs of the drainage basin system
Evaporation, evapotranspiration and river discharge
What are the stores in the drainage basin system?
Interception, soil water, surface water, ground water and channel storage
What are the flows (above ground) in the drainage basin system?
throughfall, stemflow, overland flow, and channel flow
What are the flows (below ground) in the drainage basin system?
infiltration, percolation, throughflow, groundwater, and baseflow.
Underground water: water tables, ground water, recharge, and springs.
What is the hydrological cycle?
The cycle of water between the atmosphere, lithosphere and biosphere
What is evaporation?
The process by which a liquid is changed into a gas
What is sublimation?
The process by which a solid is turned into a gas
PEVT
- potential evapotranspiration is water loss that would occur if there was an unlimited supply of water in the soil for use by evapotranspiration
River Discharge
The movement of water in channels like streams and rivers
- water may enter the river from precipitation or through other flows
What is interception loss
Water that is retained by plant surfaces and that is later evaporated away or absorbed by the plant
What is throughfall?
Water that either falls through gaps in the vegetation or that drops from leaves or twigs
What os stemflow?
Water that trickles along twigs and branches and finally down the main trunk
What is soil water (or soil moisture) and what are 4 things that can happen to the water when here?
The subsurface water in soul and subsurface layers above the water table.
1) absorbed
2) held
3) transmitted downwards towards water table
4) transmitted upwards towards the soil surface and atmosphere
Where is most of the water held in coarse textured soils?
In fairly large pores at low suctions
