Hydrological cycle and drainage basin system Flashcards
1
Q
What is transpiration?
A
Water vapour released through the stomata in the leaves
2
Q
What is interception?
A
Water being intercepted by trees and vegetation and being stored on the leaves and vegetation
3
Q
What is throughflow?
A
Water flowing horizontally through the soil into the river
4
Q
What is percolation?
A
Water flows vertically through the soil and rocks
5
Q
What is infiltration?
A
Water seeping into the ground
6
Q
What is groundwater flow?
A
Water flowing horizontally through the rock into the river
7
Q
Describe the five steps of the hydrological cycle.
A
- Water evaporates from the water (lake/sea/river)
- Plants give off water vapour from transpiration
- The water condensates and turns from vapour to liquid
- Water falls on the earths surface through precipitation
- The water runs back into the river/sea/lake through surface runoff or groundwater and the process repeats
