Hydrological Cycle Flashcards
Hydrological system
A sequence of processes that occur to ensure that water is naturally replenished on teh Earth. This is a global circulation of water- a giant closed system. This means that there is a a fixed mount of water in teh system because water can neither enter or leaves the earth and its atmosphere
Precipitation
Any moisture that falls from the sky
Infiltration
When water travels form teh surface of teh earth into the ground beneath
Surface run-off
When water travels across teh surface of teh earth
Channel flow
Water that’s travelling in river or streams.
Through Fall
Water that passes directly through a canopy or is initially intercepted by above ground vegetative surfaces and subsequently drips from the canopy
Leaf Drip
Intercepted water dripping off vegetation to ground
Stem flow
When intercepted water drains from outlying leaves and branches and is channeled to teh stems and trunks of the vegetation
Percolation
When water travels deeper into teh ground, from unsaturated ground into saturated ground.
Groundwater-flow
Teh movement of water through saturated ground, known as aquifer.
Through-flow
Lateral movement of water through unsaturated ground, Close to teh land surface
Interception
When an object stops precipitation from reaching beneath the ground
Vegetation storage
All moisture stores in vegetation
Surface storage
Any water that is held on the surface of the earth. Some surface stores may be temporary
Soil moisture
Water that is stores below the surface in unsaturated ground
