hydrological cycle Flashcards
evaporation
the process of water turning from a liquid to a gas
condensation
the process of water vapour turning from a gas to a liquid
precipitation
water falling from the sky as rain, sleet, snow or hail
surface runoff
the movement of water over the Earth’s surface
interception
precipitation collected by vegetation
transpiration
when water in plants and trees is released into the air as water vapour
groundwater flow
the movement of water underground (lower layers of soil)
percolation
the vertical movement of water through pores and cracks in soil and permeable rocks
throughflow
the lateral movement of water through soil in the upper layers
infiltration
when water on the surface enters soil by being absorbed.
Water can travel through permeable rock which is when there are gaps in the rock which allow water and gas to travel through
Impermeable rock has no gaps and so water and gas cannot travel through
water table
the level at which all the pores in the rock are full of water. the height of the water table rises and falls according to the precipitation (storage)
