Hydrogen Sulfide Production Flashcards
What is hydrogen sulfide?
A gas produced by certain microorganisms through dissimilation of organic-sulfur containing amino acids under anaerobic conditions OR through reduction of inorganic sulfur compounds.
What metabolic activity is associated with hydrogen sulfide production?
Fermentation reactions
What can the enzymes of H2S producing microorganisms do?
Reduce the sulfur atom of inorganic sulfur-containing compounds or remove the sulfide group from sulfur-containing amino acids.
What does the black in the culture tubes indicate?
H2S is produced and is reacting with ferrous iron salts to create black iron sulfide.
Where is black iron sulfide found in nature?
Muds in swamps, lakes, and streams.
What those of media can be used to sect the production of H2S?
PIA (peptone iron agar)
KIA (Kliegler iron agar)
TSI (triple soy agar)
What two media agar are used solely to detect H2S production?
Peptone iron agar (PIA)
Lead acetate agar
What to media agar are considered multipurpose media?
KIA kligler agar
TSI triple soy agar
Why is KIA and TSI considered multipurpose?
They can also demonstrate the fermentation of certain carbohydrates as well as the production of H2S.
TSI and KIA are also used for identifying pathogens….true or false?
True.
What are the incubation period for this experiment?
37 degree C for 24-48 hours
What does a red slant and yellow butt indicate?
Glucose has been fermented to acid.
What will you see if glucose is fermented to acid AND gas?
Gas bubbles or splitting occurs in the butt.
What does it mean if the slant and butt are both yellow?
Glucose and lactose have been fermented.
If both the slant and butt are yellow and gas bubbles appear in the butt, what does this indicate?
Glucose and lactose have been fermented to acid gas.
