Microzide is indicated for adjunctive therapy in EDEMA associated with CONGESTIVE HEART failure, HEPATIC CIRRHOSIS, CORTICOSTEROID, and ESTROGEN THERAPY, or various forms of renal dysfunction.
The recommended dose for this indication is, 25 to 100 mg QD in a single or divided oral dose. Alternate dat therapy may be sufficient.
What dose of Microzide is used when used for control of hypertension?
25mg in a single daily dose. Some patients may require up to 50mg per day in divided doses.
What dose of Hydrochlorothiazide is used in children?
1-2mg/kg/day in single or divided doses. Infants under 6 months of age may require up to 3 mg/kg/day in two divided doses.
What should the providers monitor when their patient is on Microzide?

What is the mechanism of action for Microzide?
It inhibits the reabsorption of sodium and chloride at the distal renal tubule. It reaches peak plasma levels in 4 hours with a 1/2 life of 6-15 hours. Excretion of unchanged drug occurs in urine.
What are the drug interactions of Hydrochlorothiazide?
- May decrease sulfonylurea hypoglycemia.
- Electrolyte disturbance kay cause DIGITALIS-induced arrhythmias.
- Use with diazoxide may cause hyperglycemia.
- May increase lithium serum levels.
What are the contraindications of Microzide?
- Contraindicated in patients with anuria or who are hypersensitive to sulfonamide-derived drugs.
- Use with caution in patients with cirrhosis, gout, impaired renal or hepatic function, diabetes, and in patients who are taking corticosteroids or ACTH
- Pregnancy Category B
What are the adverse effects of Hydrochlorothiazide?
Dry mouth, muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting, anemia, weakness, dizziness, orthostatic hypotension, anorexia, GI distress including diarrhea/constipation, hyperglycemia, photosensitivity, rash, and transient blurred vision
What should the RPh tell the Hydrochlorothiazide patient while counseling them?
- May be taken with food or milk if GI upset occurs
- Timing of dose is important because of increase diuresis. Usually given in early a.m.
- Avoid overexposure to sunlight
- if a dose is missed, skip it
